Basic Information about Tanzania

The United Republic of Tanzania, which is a country located in the Middle East region of Africa, has coasts to the Indian Ocean. Tanzania is also under the protection of UNESCO.

The name of Tanzania consists of the first syllables of the Republic of Tanganyika and the country of Zanzibar. As a matter of fact, these two countries, which merged on April 26, 1964, became present-day Tanzania.

Tanzania is a country in East Africa within the African Great Lake region. It borders Uganda to the north; Kenya to the northeast; Comoro Islands and the Indian Ocean to the east; Mozambique and Malawi to the south; Zambia to the southwest; and Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the west. Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, is in northeastern Tanzania.

In Tanzania, there are 126 different ethnic groups. Each community has its own unique language. But the official language of the country is Swahili. A third of the country is Muslim and Christian, while the remaining population adopts local religions.

Visit to Banju Madrasa

We visited Banju Madrasa where there are 650 students memorizing Qur’an in one of the villages of Darussalam, Tanzania's largest city with a population of 4.5 million. A quarter of the population is Muslim in Tanzania.  Muslim communities that are deprived of educational assistance from Europe continue their educational services in the madrasas they have built with their own facilities in spite of all the difficult conditions .

650 students study in Banju Madrasah.  400 of them stay here as boarders and the rest of them come from outside and attend to classes. There are many orphans among these students.

Bed, Pillows, Bed Sheets, Mosquito Net and Food Aids

At the first stage, 150 beds, pillows, bed sheets and mosquito nets were donated to Banju Madrasah, which offers courses in Qur’an memorization and Islamic studies. In addition, two cattles were slaughtered as qurban and their meat were donated to the madrasa for the students who stayed there.
